In October 2000 Angela Dreher presented a vision for outreach to Reverend John McCullough,
Pastor of Friendship Baptist Church of Gastonia North Carolina. The target programs included:
1. A resource center for the homeless providing showers, transportation assistance, a mobile
health unit, a place to make telephone calls etc.,
2. A rehab program for substance abusers, including establishment of a half-way house and
mentoring,
3. Education and Job training for the homeless,
4. Services for the elderly and
5. A youth program including mentoring and substance abuse education.
She took the initiative by getting actively involved with the local Continuum of Care in addition to
beginning a street ministry out of her car that included feeding the homeless, providing them
with clothing, going into homeless camps, etc. In April of 2002, the City of Gastonia police got
involved with the program, assisting in mentoring the first 4 homeless clients in the program.
Their involvement resulted in a substantial cost savings.
In July 2002, Ms. Dreher started contracting with the City of Gastonia as a consultant to the
Mayors Taskforce on Homelessness, eventually becoming chairperson between July 2003 and
June 2005.
Connections were made with the Downtown Faith Network, the Interagency Resource Project
and Goodwill Industries Job Connection that allowed her to offer additional levels of service to
the homeless. These connections allowed her to network with other care providers and allowed
these other agencies to become familiar with her services so that they could refer their clients
to her. In the mean time she continued to work out of her car for about a year.
Up until this time, Ms. Dreher had been assisting the homeless out of the trunk of her car.
However In April of 2003 Crisis Assistance Ministry donated the space at the current location at
805-A West Airline Avenue, Gastonia, N.C. 28052. The office was officially opened on
November 3, 2003. A board of directors was selected, and assigned responsibilities. Ms.
Dreher has operated the center with the assistance of several staff members, volunteers and a
consultant. What started out simply as an idea became, through Gods Grace, much effort and
the cooperation of other individuals and groups, a viable organization. What started out as a
desire to serve has become embodied in an organization called As One Ministries, Inc.
